The two full-time directors who developed the program in 1989 are still happily going strong. They are committed to tweaking and adjusting the program to ensure that each child has a wonderful experience. The child to staff ratio is always 6:1 or better to ensure quality.

Many alumni children stay in touch, some return to work at the center, some return with children of their own, some of the staff come back with their children. The directors participate in as many interesting professional growth opportunities as they can. They are always open to adding new dimensions to the program.

This is a center where programming is determined primarily by a profound respect for the philosophies of human development philosophy, as well as common sense and utility.

Huge fan of Brookland woods. My daughter went there 3 mornings a week, we wanted the interaction like preschool but with freedom to explore play and friendship. She starts kindergarten soon and talks regularly about her friends. Our son starts soon and she reassures him about how much fun he will have, how nice everyone is, and all the friends he'll make.

Our daughter is 2.5 years old and LOVES her daycare. And so do we! The staff is so dedicated and passionate about the kids there, and it really shows. We have noticed that the ratio of adults to children is often lower than that required by law (e.g. there are more adults than need to be), allowing them to pay more attention to the kids. Also, they allow so much freedom for the kids - they are able to choose their activities which we love. Overall, could not ask for a better experience for us or our daughter!

We really loved the open and creative play. We had all three of our boys here and would absolutely recommend it to anyone. We loved the directors and felt completely comfortable knowing that our boys were safe and cared for by people who are actually invested in the process.

My child spent the last 2 years at MJSCCC and will be entering kindergarten in the fall. I researched every option available in the IC area and this was the *only* option that I found suitable for what I wanted in preschool. The backyard space is absolutely INCREDIBLE. Children are given the freedom to choose what activities they want to embrace. And not to my surprise, my child spends the majority of the day outside, in fresh air, being active, learning how to solve conflict with friends, how to be a leader, and how to care for others.

I will recommend this center forever and ever. The staff are always communicating about my child's day, they are open, honest, and genuinely care for my child.

When children are young, they need strong attachments, fresh air, the ability to make choices about their day (in an age when they have very little choice) and peers to help them grow. The staff support these things 100% and I am so thankful to have found this center.

We feel so blessed that our child attended MJSCCC during her preschool years. She turned out to be
a confident, kind and creative school kid. She is excelling in her academic skills, and at the same time she is a kind friend and described as "a role model" in her class. Her language skills are remarkable and we think this is due to having such a well-educated staff at MJSCCC. They say it takes a village to raise a child - Brookland Woods made this possible for us and we will be forever grateful! Our child has gained life-skills and received so much love to last her for a lifetime.

All three of our children have gone to the MJSCCC at Brookland Woods. Our son, who is five and will soon go to kindergarten, has been at Brookland Woods since he was two. The center has a very laid-back, low-stress vibe where kids from ages 2-5 play together in an 100-year-old house near the University of Iowa campus or in the fantastic multi-level, shaded playground in back. There is a great staff-to-children ratio and the college students who work there have a lot of fun with the children. Directors Sharon and Jill are experienced child care providers and managers. They also truly love the kids. Sharon often sends emails with funny stories about our children or helpful things we might try at home. There is not a lot of traditional school preparation at Brookland Woods, but I believe the intention is for kids to use their natural inclinations to learn through play. We have been very happy with Brookland Woods.

This is an outstanding day care center! Our daughter learned so much there, the staff were very educated and genuinely loving and kind. The kids develop excellent social skills, make friends while learning important educational concepts. We feel so privileged we chose this place. We will be grateful for life! Absolutely recommended!

We have now sent both of our children to MJSCCC. This place is magical. It is the only way I can think to describe it. The staff is engaged and kind. I love the concept of learning through play. Each day I am eager to hear about what sort of self made adventure my son has been on.

Our daughter absolutely loves going to daycare here. She has blossomed into an inquisitive little girl who is eager to learn and seeks out playmates, in part I believe due to her happy experiences here. Jill and Sharon are caring, responsive, and always open to ideas. I recommend this daycare to everyone!

We were new to the USA and the first thing that made our transition to a new country and a new city so smooth was sending our daughters to MJSCC. Sharon and Jill have taken excellent care of both our daughters. Our girls going to MJSCC made us feel secure and the girls really enjoyed themselves in their formative years. Our elder one started school and had to stop going and she was really upset and till date misses her time spent there. Our younger one will start going to school this year but she frowns when we tell her she can't go to MJSCC. They both will always remain attached to MJSCC. Hats of to Sharon and Jill for make it such a homely atmosphere for the kids to grow up in.

The best child care centers in Iowa City. Both of my kids started at age 2 and my oldest (who is now seven) still loves to go visit and talk with the directors. I love that they encourage learning through play instead of a rigid curriculum.

There is no separation by ages and instead all the kids play together. This has been extremely helpful for my youngest, who was a bit slow to talk, but within a couple of months at BW was talking full sentences. In addition, keeping the kids all together means that there is no stressful adjustments that comes with switching to different rooms and teachers.

The directors are also extremely flexible and listen to the needs of the kids and parents. You are always informed about issues that come up or how things are going throughout the day. Every time you go to pick up the kids everyone is playing and happy, which is the sign of a great facility.
