When it became clear that I needed additional help to care for my homebound, terminally ill 88 year-old mother, I was apprehensive about finding someone who would be the "right fit". My mother...how can I say this...was unique. A character. Incredibly lovable and endearing once you got to know her, but independent and stubborn...with everyone, but especially with strangers. And she swore like a sailor. (Like I said...a character). How could possibly find someone to help who my mother would not just grudgingly accept, but actually listen to...and like? Ashley Askew was that person. Genuinely kind, patient and competent...Ashley did not just step into my mother's world, she embraced it. She "got" my mother. And within a day or two my mother (who didn't particularly like or even remember the various health care workers who came by to check on her) was asking, "Where's Ashley? I want Ashley". During several months of regular visits three or four times a week, Ashley went far beyond what she was being "paid to do"...not just bathing my mother...changing her...feeding her, but carrying on a constant exchange and interaction. Singing to her. Telling her stories ("And then what happened?" my mother would say excitedly). That connection was so much more than what I had hoped for. When my mother passed away...Ashley cried with us. By that point, she was like a member of the family.
Less than a month later, I had an accident and broke my neck. There were limits on what I was able to do on my own as I recovered from surgery. Like my mother, I am fiercely independent and it never occurred to me to ask for help. But Ashley, who had remained in contact not just as "a member of the family" but as a friend, knew right away. She went to work researching rehabilitation exercises for spinal injuries, came by to help me wash my hair, do my laundry, and just gossip and laugh with me. Exactly what I needed. I cannot recommend anyone more highly than Ashley Askew. If you need genuine, kind, loving care...there is no one better.
Ashely is one of a team of people who has one goal in mind and that is to treat their clients with the kindness, dignity and compassion we can all only hope to receive when we need it most.
