Auto insurance: How do you handle it?
By Kristin W. on Wed Oct 9, 2013 at 12:57 PM EDT
Hello fellow mommies! :)

I recently hired a nanny (our fifth, by the way). Part of her duties were to transport my children to and from school - this is in addition to other typical nanny tasks. She worked for us for about a month and then decided that she no longer felt comfortable driving my children in her car because they are not covered under her insurance. She then stated that her insurance agent would make her get taxi-cab insurance because that's her job - to transport people in her vehicle. Essentially, she stated her insurance agent said there was no liability coverage for my children in the event something happened to them. This was a total surprise to me because (1) this is the first time that I have ever heard of such; and (2) is it not assumed that my children (or any other individuals riding in her car) are her passengers, thus they would be covered under her policy?

To get more clarity on this, I called my insurance agent who provided us a couple of options. There's the option to add a business endorsement on the nanny's auto policy that says "hey part of my job is to use my vehicle" or my agent said we could link the policies such that in the event something happened, my children would be undoubtedly covered. Her response was that HER agent said those were not options and once again, they will NOT be covered under any circumstances.

So, I'm curious - how do you all handle auto insurance when your nanny transports your children?

Thanks!

Kristin

Kristin,
So sorry to hear that you have to deal with this. How unfortunate as I have never heard of this situation before. Many people drive kids to school and do not get a 'taxi-cab insurance'. Would your nanny be willing to drive them if you helped offset the cost of her insurance some? I highly doubt any reputable insurance company would leave your kids without coverage should the unfortunate happen. That would not be doing the right thing. I mean, grandparents drive their grandkids around and they would be covered. I hope you got this situation taken care of.
