Your profile is up and now you're waiting for some action. When you're looking for a child care job online, your profile is your first chance to make an impression -- now make it count. If you're struggling to land your next care job, take control of your success by updating your Care.com profile. "By just utilizing a few applications on Care.com, you can really build out your online personality -- which is the best way for potential clients to see all the great things you can bring to them as a caregiver," says Martha Fan, Care.com's member care manager. Here, Fan offers some tips to help you make the most of your profile.

  1. Beef Up Your Info
Employers want to get to know you through your profile. "You've got to go beyond just saying 'I like kids' or 'I babysit for my niece'," says Fan. Be specific about your years of experience and how long you have worked in each position. "People like to see that you view babysitting as your profession," says Fan. Be as detailed as possible in what your duties were and show that you have built loyalty with your past or current families. Also, be sure to review your profile regularly and update it as needed, especially your availability chart.

  2. Say Cheese
People want to see photos of who might be taking care of their kids or loved ones, says Fan. "It brings your profile to life and helps people feel like they know you already," says Fan. If you don't already have a photo on your profile, be sure to post one that gives a respectable representation of yourself.

  3. Highlight Your Skills
Are you currently taking classes? Have you taught school in the past? Do you have a nursing degree? Be sure to make any training you have very clear in your profile -- people like to see that you have skills and experiences that you can bring to the job. Also, be sure to emphasize any past experience that includes caring for twins or special needs children.

If you're not already CPR certified, consider looking into a certification course. "It's a basic skill that can really make you stand out from other candidates," says Fan. Read our article on How to Get First Aid and CPR Training »

  4. Personalize Your Application
When you apply to a job posting, you have an option to send a message. Use it! Be sure to personalize the message for that particular job posting, so it doesn't feel like a mass mailing, suggests Martha.

  5. Ask for Reviews
If you have other families that you've worked with on Care.com, ask them to write a review for you. While only paying members of Care.com can write reviews, you can ask other past employers to be listed as a reference on your profile instead.

  6. Promote Yourself
An option called "Promote My Services" allows you to print flyers to post around town -- these include your information and a link to your profile. The option also gives you tips on how to put a link to your Care.com profile on craigslist, Twitter and Facebook. "This tool lets you get the word out about your services without having to duplicate efforts," says Martha. And you can now connect to Care.com with Facebook. Your profile and job post will appear on Facebook, giving your more exposure.

To find these options, go to "My Care.com", then click on "My Account & Settings". On the left side of the page, you will see "Promote My Services".

  7. Run a Background Check
Even though a family can run a background check on Care.com, you can run your own background check for $8, which is included in a Premium Provider membership and makes the results available sooner for potential employers. "It's just one more step that your potential employer doesn't have to do," says Martha. Being proactive and helpful from the start can go a long way in landing your next child care job.

  8. Get Reviews and Connections
Build up your reputation on Care.com by encouraging employers to leave reviews of your services and have other people connect to your profile. If someone is a member, they can write a review that is posted on your profile. If they are not a member, then they still show up as a connection. (Or a family can easily sign up as a free basic member to leave a review for you). Having these connections shows that you have contacts in the caregiving field and are trusted by other families and caregivers.

  9. Add Additional Profiles
Create profiles for not only nanny jobs, but housekeeping and tutoring ones as well. It's a great way to get different positions and capture the attention of more families on the site. It's easy to do and located under "My Profile and Settings."

  10. Maximize Your Profile Strength
Check out "My Profile Strength," located on your "My Care.com Page" in the top right corner. It verifies that you are doing everything possible to promote yourself and suggesting things (like reviews, references, etc.) to add to your account.

  11. Become a Premium Member
The main benefit of investing in a premium membership is being able to reach out to families before they reach out to the rest of Care.com. Members are also able to see who has viewed their account, run a background check for free and get listed higher in the search results. Care.com needs to be aware that people apply to work for them in order to make money. Upon initial application, many of us cannot afford to 'upgrade to premium', and pay for premier background checks. This not only limits our opportunities at Care.com, but it makes clients think we don't want to share our background! It would be great if you offered an opportunity for potential caregivers to pay for these services out of wages. This option would benefit both of us!

I have noticed that not many families like to leave feedback after you have babysat for them. Only a few will do this.

Care has given me many me opportunities to get jobs as a Nanny. This allows me to continue to use my Educational background with my Masters Degrees and to keep working and helping children. I work with a lot of professional families that want the educational supplement into the day, and I love it. Care has always answered my questions and been very good with responses. They are a good Child Care Service and Keep top Concern for the Children and The parents who are Hiring them from what I have experienced! Thanks, Sherri g.

I am very sorry for frustrations, Julie M. I was able to locate your account and it appears that you've applied to about 20 or so jobs since you've been a Care.com member. Just so you're aware, we organize your jobs by vertical and each vertical has it's own tab when you click to view your applications.

Unfortunately, I'm not seeing record of any attempts being made to add references, but you can do so by simply clicking the "My References" link on the left-hand side toolbar and filling out the necessary information. You are required to enter in the reference's full name and email address, but rest assured that the email will never be revealed and that only the reference's first name and last initial will be shown. I hope this helps and wish you all the best in your job search!

Hi Natasha E! You are not required to upgrade to the Premium membership, but it is an option every caregiver has to receive additional benefits. With the Free Basic membership, you're able to search and apply for jobs which potential employers can view. However, with the Premium membership you show up higher in search results as well as a Featured provider to draw more attention to your profile. You also have the ability to initiate contact with members who are looking to hire care as opposed to only applying to jobs that have been posted thus increasing your chances of landing a job. I hope this information helps!

Hi Laura N! You can find the "Promote My Services" option on the left-hand side toolbar when you log into your account. It's in between the "My Stats" and "Refer Friends" options. I hope this helps!

Hello, I want to thank you in advance for the good experiences I've had with previous families. I agree with some of the comments regarding families not replying to us as we are required to do so.
It would be nice to know that you're not the right candidate or they have found someone else. I'm just saying, I have applied many times and have been left waiting on several occasions. I will look into taking some CPR classes as well maybe that will help me get notice.

thanks

I have applied to many jobs and yet you still post that I have only applied for seven. I have also had extensive background checks and fingerprints as I work in a school district and work with children. I keep trying to add references and it doesn't accept them. I have had only three responses several months ago and am beginning to feel that I am now wasting my time even applying to jobs! I have a great deal of experience and a lot to offer but honestly don't even know if people are even getting to review my profile or qualifications.

I agree that Care.com should find a way for families looking to hire someone, to, at the least, acknowledge the application. Better yet would be a brief explanation (possibly a checkbox) as to why the applicant was not considered.

Hi:) I am just wondering if being only a "basic" member is not enough. I have applied for a few different jobs that I am well qualified for but for some reason I never receive a reply back! It's somewhat frustrating to continue to check and never have a "new message" :) are they seeing my application?
