Profile of Amanda W.
Part-Time, 4 Years of Experience
I am a highly experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly tutor. I have worked with eight students in professional tutoring arrangements, helping each one of them advance dramatically in their subject, ranging from: English? writing (up to college level and AP), Math (up to Geometry), History/Social Science (including all AP subjects), Science (particularly Biology), and many specialized subjects such as economics, political science, sociology, psychology, etc. In other words, I'm very flexible. I've tutored students age 12 to 18, but I am very flexible in that area as well, and would be willing to work with young children too. I am currently employed by the nation's largest in-home tutoring company, which only hires tutors who meet professional standards. I am currently a senior at San Francisco State University, and many assume this implies I lack experience or knowledge. However, I think my place in life speaks to the contrary; the high school experience is still close enough for me to remember it clearly. I am able to relate to the students on a different level--because, in some way, I am one of them. This makes the interaction much more equitable and friendly, while still maintaining ample authority to keep lessons running smoothly. My teaching style is relatively laid back. I don't believe in excess pressure, as it is what ended up doing a lot of my friends in in high school. I help a student relax, approach the subject with a more subdued eye, and then understand the information for what it really is. It is far better to learn a subject from its core than memorize irrelevant facts. Also, I believe a key part of doing well in school is to understand how tests themselves work. They are what often makes or breaks a grade. However, if the student can learn to understand how tests are structured and what kind of knowledge they are designed to get out of you, then it lets off some of the pressure--again, allowing to understand the subject for what is, instead of what it can be made out to be. Suddenly a test is not such a scary thing and the student can relax and let their true knowledge show. Another key point is to relate to the student on a deeper level. There is so much pressure on students in recent years. It is important to remind them what they are working for, and to help them achieve academically without making themselves miserable. I believe my approach achieves that.- Female
