Martha L. - Los Angeles Tutor or Private Instructor

Profile of Martha L.

Part-Time, 3 Years of Experience

I am currently attending Long Beach State and hope to graduate in December 2009. I enjoy working with children, I have patience, knowledge, and most important experience from infancy to adolescence. I have been an assistant teacher, after-school staff, preschool assistant teacher and now a tutor. I am currently working for a nonprofit organization, ABC INC. This job offered me a great opportunity to work with children from ages 6 to 18. Most of the students I tutor weren't at their grade level, as a professional tutor, I had to evaluate the child and see the areas I needed to overcome. I started to see a great number of improvement from math, to reading as well as their grammar and vocabulary. My passion and value is education, I believe without education life is a enigma. "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself." ~John Dewey

As a formal tutor I was able to change many students' perspectives of the subject they needed help on. It was great to see and hear the student smile and say, "now I get it." One of the many touching experiences was teaching a fourth grader how to read. He was five years behind, and was forced to repeat his grade twice. When I first began tutoring this child; I was able to see how his self-esteem was descended; he felt there wasn't a future. I was able to grasp his lonesomenes and lack for education. I worked with him for at least 20 hours. He now has a brighter perspective of education and has confidence that he can now overcome any obstacle. This child has goals in mind, a better understanding of the real world, and confidence with his life and future.
