When I was in high school, I volunteered to be a reading tutor at a local elementary school. I was teamed up with a second-grade girl who was shy, but willing to work on her spelling, reading, and writing skills. We worked on one book at a time until she felt comfortable reading the entire book, then moved onto another. The experience taught me to be a more patient, understanding, enthusiastic, and caring individual. In college, I volunteered to be part of an adult literacy program at a local homeless shelter/soup kitchen. The man my partner and I were teamed up with needed help with spelling, grammar, and writing. One day a week, we would meet to improve his skills and it proved to be a gratifying experience. I think he left the program feeling more confident in what he could do and achieve. Reading, spelling, grammar, and writing are my strengths when it comes to tutoring. I graduated college with a BA in history and anthropology, so I would be willing to tutor those subjects too.
