I have been a substitute teacher in Tennessee (two school districts) and in Georgia (St. Joseph Catholic School), as well as an after school Homework Coordinator under Principle V. Daniel at Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle School in Athens, for two school years before he retired. In that capacity, I assisted middle school students with homework in all subjects. I was also a Sunday School and Catechism teacher 5+ years.
I recently completed a Bachelor Degree in English, in the Honors Program at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. (I completed an honors thesis in literature, long distance from Athens, GA after my coursework had been complete for years).
I have minor in Biology and Journalism, and I am applying to local fellowship and bridge programs for teaching careers.
I have a special interest in Special Ed, and I have experience with ADHD children and have friends who manage dyslexia and discalcula (disposing of printed numerals). I taught my own child and children of my friends to read when they were between the ages of 2 and 4. I have a strong interest in literacy, and I believe that, like math, anyone can learn with patience, interest, and methods that are suited to the individual learner. I begin slowly, by making the process fun and interesting, and by focusing on the student's gains and progress.
Although I have not yet become a certified teacher, I have taken and passed the PRAXIS English Content Knowledge tests (for TN), which are higher-level tests than the Basic Knowledge Tests, that are not required for at least a year after obtaining a provisional teaching certificate.
I have also recently take the GACE Basic exams in English and the higher-level GACE Writing Test for teachers of English, and those results will be in soon. I am scheduling Special Education Content Knowledge tests soon, as well.
I will give discounted lessons for scheduling more than one lesson per week, as I feel that it is beneficial to the student's progress and confidence to meet for tutoring at least twice a week.
I believe that many students with learning differences are much more capable than some people think.
I am also interested in tutoring very young, highly gifted children, who can sometimes pose great challenges to a teacher. I find that highly gifted children are often not recognized as young children because of ADD or other learning differences.
I believe than any person, who has a real desire to learn, can learn anything, at his or her own pace and with suitable techniques.
