My formal education took place at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where I earned a Bachelor of Music degree summa cum laude and was elected to the honor societies Phi Beta Kappa and Delta Epsilon Sigma. But since my undergraduate studies extended through the equivalent of 10 semesters, I was able, unlike most music majors, to include a diverse range of courses outside my major, including upper division courses in English, Spanish, and philosophy. My graduate studies at Princeton University included time in Rome on a Fulbright Scholarship for research in the Vatican Library. At one time or another I've taught every level from kindergarten to graduate school, plus adults. For the past 10 years or so, I've concentrated on some classroom teaching (English, Latin, Spanish) as well as tutoring. I especially enjoy working with young people, when their minds are wide open to all the possibilities of life. I strongly believe in treating young students with respect, and that it's a great mistake to underestimate them. What I love about tutoring, teaching one to one, is that I get to know the student well as a person, an individual. Then I can help him or her find the best way to use his or her own strengths, talents, and abilities to succeed. In a way, that's not different from what I've been doing during my whole musical career. As a choral conductor of amateur groups, mostly church choirs, I've taught singing technique as a way of letting them get the best out of whatever their innate abilities may be. Above all, I try to build up a student's self-confidence, lack of which is so often the root cause of difficulties in school.
