I started tutoring as a junior in college when I was getting my Bachelor's in English Literature at the University of Connecticut. One day, one of my friends asked me to help her revise and edit a final paper of hers. After her grade went from a B to an A, she told a bunch of her friends and classmates. Until I graduated, I had about 3-4 tutoring sessions a week, and I got new students solely based off of word of mouth and being referred by students of mine that achieved better grades.
After college, I started tutoring high school and middle school English. I have helped students in every stage of paper writing: drafting an outline, organizing the structure of an academic paper, word choice and usage, and double-checking grammar, punctuation and spelling.
I also helped students analyze and critique their assigned readings for their English classes. I would quiz them on the basics, such as plot, setting, and character, before delving in harder literary elements such as motifs, symbols, and themes. I would assist with homework questions, and teach students study techniques to better prepare them for exams.
