I have been working with children and teens with special needs for over 14 years, starting in California in 1998 working as an Activities Director which led to an invitation by the government of Romania to work in their orphanage system. By 2001 I was employed as a special education teacher. For the past 3 years I've been working with adolescents with behavioral health issues at a Treatment Center in GA. In 2009 I wrote a book. It is based on Freud's theory that the behavior we witness is only 10% of the person's total experience. The rest is under the surface and can only be dealt with if the person is willing to talk about it with someone they trust. I use my book at the treatment center to help adolescents: a. Learn appropriate boundaries b. Regulate their emotions c. Cope with reality on reality's terms d. Trust others e. Define co-dependence/depression f. Feel comfortable with their peers and society
I have been featured on radio in Atlanta and my book has been supported and promoted by a pediatrician and a psychologist. I speak to groups of students at high schools, middle schools and churches. The kids are actually interested to learn the basics of human psychology. Yet, the main purpose of the book is to get young people to recognize abuse, neglect or trauma. Most adults would be amazed that 90% of secondary students cannot do this. Also, I train professionals (teachers, counselors, and paraprofessionals) how to teach my curriculum to their students.
Since 2010 I have been volunteering with Opportunity Knocks for Youth. I help them with their fund drives and I assist the Executive Director with grant applications. The program helps at-risk teens with life skills and mentoring support.
