28 years ago in 1981, I was blessed with an Autistic son. In the beginning, my husband and I were told that we needed to take parenting classes. Our son was low functioning at birth with feeding difficulties. As he grew, more symptoms became apparent; no social skills or reasoning ability. Speech was next to none; in fact he was first diagnosed with a speech disorder when he was five. Not until I decided to stand up and be my child's advocate; researching Autism, did he start receiving the help he needed. Now if you run into him, you would never know how hard he has worked to become the man that he is today. My very strong opinion is to never put a child in a box and assume they will react the way you predict; because they will amaze you! I was also an Educational Assistant with the Centennial School District for five years. I mostly assisted Autistic children. Some training that I have had during that time included: Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, CPI training for a safe, non-harmful manner dealing with children with behavior management problems. Identify useful non-verbal techniques in the prevention of acting out behavior. Implement verbal techniques to deescalate hostile confrontations. Customer service, leadership management, Multitasking, and working well under stress. Also, various office duties including: phones, computer skills, research and inventory, assisted students with physical limitations, including wheelchair, feedings, and the use of a hoist system.
Other Qualifications, Certifications and Credentials
Willing to take any need courses, obtain any needed certificates and or credentials. I have had my First Aid and CPR card in the past. At this time it is not current, and I need to take the course.
