As a High School student, I became a member of the Best Buddies club, where they pair you with a person with special needs and you for a one to one friendship for the year. Every year you get a new person as your "buddy" but in my own experience it has been a joy to continue my friendships with those buddies long after I left high school. I was hired by a mother of a child with Autism to provide respite care to her 15-year-old daughter. Her daughter, Rachael, is now 19 and I'm still her care provider. I have helped out with Special Olympics for many years, and love every minute of it. The joy that is expressed on the faces of the athletes melts my heart every time and It gives me such joy that I'm able to be a part of it.
I have also worked at Camp Horizons, teaching children and adults with varying disabilities the daily living functions, ie: showering, brushing teeth, etc. as well as being the drama program instructor for camp.
