My ex-boyfriend became paralyzed from the shoulders down 3 years ago (at the age of 23) in a river accident. I've always cared the world for the guy & we continue to remain major parts of one another's lives to this day. Naturally, I've got incredible high standards for how I feel he should be treated & I've consistently been upset by the assistance he's received. Over this past week that I've been in Boston, I've stayed with him & been extremely frustrated by the attitudes of his assistants who have been inconsistent & act as if they are being put out when he requests any kind of care (such as eating, drinking, or having someone assist him with stretches that would reduce his pain). Because of our history, we've both agreed that I would never be part in his toileting, which is why we've agreed that I wouldn't accept a position working for him; however, I have worked with "developmentally disabled" adults in the past & have no opposition in helping with this type of care with others. Because I am currently working for a part time/low key job while I am out here (Boston area) & pursuing medical care of my own, there are many special needs that I would be able to assist in. Due to my personal relationship, I feel this would be a very appropriate position for me, as I know what kind of help currently exists out there.

I was working as a Marriage & Family Therapy Intern, en route to graduating next summer, though recently had to take a medical withdrawal to come out east for medical treatment. I also worked as an Addiction Counselor and, prior to that, worked at a Residential Treatment Facility for children with severe emotional & behavioral issues (this was following my position working with developmentally disabled adults). I have until next summer to determine whether or not I will be returning to my program (mostly dependent on my health at that time); therefore, I currently have no plans to return to Oregon. If I found a fitting position, I'd be likely to move out here for a longer period of time to be closer to this friend, in which case I may fly back out to Oregon to get my car (and my small dog!).
