I have had the wonderful experience in working with a young man who has nonverbal autism. I have worked together with him for the past 6 years assisting to conquer daily personal habits and tasks. These include but are not limited to bathing, shaving, brushing teeth, retrieving the mail, laundry, microwave cooking, exercise, puzzling, Wii sports, Special Olympics, grocery and recreational shopping, movies and dining out. I assisted his mother to doctors and dentist visits and even day surgeries. Also I helped the entire family with light housekeeping, preparing meals, laundry, and some pet care. I have a 9-year-old dog (quiet, loving & laid back.) Panda, loves to swim- play ball/Frisbee. She came to work with me for the young man with autism. He loved her & smiled.
During the time I worked with this individual, I drove him daily in Austin for social interaction. After the first 4 months, they ask me to join their team. I worked both jobs consecutively for a little over a year. My duties were assisting many adults ages 18 and up, all with disabilities. I assisted with art, games, puzzling, math and reading, some sign language, exercise, feedings, diaper changing and bathroom aide. Along with some meal preparing and light cleaning, whatever they needed I would do within my capabilities.
I have 3 daughters ages 17 and above with ADD and Dyslexia. Many of their friends call me Mom. I also have other children in my life that are not biologically mine, but I call them mine. They call me Mom, Auntie Krista, and Nenee. Soon I will be a young grandmother too.
What makes me so passionate you ask? Everyone has a calling in life. I feel that I found mine through the eyes of those in need. The experiences I gained caring for people with and without special needs, has taught me to have compassion and patience for all. It gives me a great sense of love and happiness when I see that I have made a positive change in another life; little do they know just how much they enlightened and influenced mine. Giving is receiving love and happiness.
