In my 10 years as a caregiver, I have worked for 3 special needs patients. The first was a beautiful young boy who was autistic. He was 1 years old when I started working with him and I helped him until he was 3 years old. I was told he would never be able to do anything for himself, and I am happy to say that within 2 months of working with him, he was learning to walk and feed himself. I also helped him very much with his communication skills. The second young man I worked for was 15 and was also autistic, and I worked with him for about 7 months. I think I did a great job bringing him out of his shell, his family even wanted me to move with them out of state, but I couldn't, however, I know the short time we had was very successful. The last person I worked with is my longtime boyfriend, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy. I do everything I can for him, including transportation, meals, bathing, and companionship.
