My work with special needs individuals began when I was still in elementary school, when I volunteered with a state run organization that provided day care for mentally retarded children. Then, in college, I met a woman whose entire skeletal frame was deformed. I befriended her, took her to and from school, and we even attended a singing class together. Then, as my mother aged, she broke both legs, and developed dementia. I cared for her for four years, until she was placed in a nursing home. I have a good understanding of what is entailed in working with people with special needs.
