I worked my way through college as a room helper at a local preschool. I was assigned to work with the older children, but was moved to the 2-year room to work specifically with a special needs child. He had Down Syndrome and congenital heart disease (among other challenges). He did breathing treatments multiple times a day, and also multiple forms of therapy. I had bonded with this child so, while I lacked the formal experience that was previously deemed necessary to work in this classroom, the parents requested that I be moved and made their "special helper". I helped him with his therapies, administered his meds, calmed his fears, etc. In the time that I worked with him, he learned to walk for the first time, started speaking 2-word sentences, and began exhibiting behaviors beyond those of an infant. His parents directly associated this progress with the care and special attention he received from me while in his classroom.

This relationship launched a strong desire to help people. I became a Wish Granting volunteer with the Make-A-Wish Foundation so that I could make a remarkable impact on other children that suffered "challenges" of all kinds. I also have nannied numerous children with autism, Asberger, and other developmental disorders. I love working with children, but particularly love working with children where I might be able to make a notable difference in their quality of life.
