I have a lot of experience with children with mental and physical handicaps. I volunteered at Camp Stepping Stones in Cincinnati, OH every summer through high school where I mainly worked with children with Autism and children with Down syndrome. My mother is a special education teacher and I have spent some time working in her middle school classroom as well. I have been learning sign language since I was in fourth grade because my close friend was deaf. In high school I got involved with St. Rita's School for the Deaf and learned more about deaf culture. I have tutored and taught children in sign language. Though I don't consider myself fluent, I know Pidgin very well.
I also have limited experience with children that use insulin pumps to manage diabetes and have lots of experience with children with severe food allergies, including instruction in the use of an Epi pen. I was a summer camp counselor at Children's Theatre of Charlotte last year and we had many children with food allergies.
