I have been taking care of my mother-in-law for years, she is now 87. Years ago she was in an auto accident crushing her legs, she stayed with us over a year and a half. She was bedridden for the first six months. I did her bed care, hygiene, pin care, colostomy care, etc. Then two years ago she showed signs of dementia and we moved her back in with us. She lived with us for over a year through the stages of dementia. My husband finally had to place her in an assisted living facility as it was too hard on him emotionally. I visit her frequently, curl and set her hair, paint her nails, and just chat. Before we had to place her in the assisted living, I thoroughly enjoyed caring for her. Before her onset of Alzheimer's, I took her to her bunco and pinochle games monthly. I also took her to the grocery store, doctor, hair appointments, miscellaneous mall shopping, among other things. I miss taking care of her. I am currently enrolled in gerontology and honors english courses at American River College. Additionally, for three years I took care of a toddler/preschooler with Asperger syndrome.
