I LOVE working with the special needs population. I first began working with them in 2001 as a Community Trainer and Job Coach. As a Community Trainer, I would take clients out into the community to various establishments in Santa Clarita such as bookshops, Sports Center, community parks, movie theaters, the bowling alley and fast food restaurants. I would teach my clients how to manage money, communicate effectively and appropriately, appropriate public behavior, how to respect authority, and proper hygiene. I would enroll clients and accompany them to class. Finally, a huge part of my job was behavior intervention.
I went on to work as a social worker assistant with the adult special needs population, conducting assessments, contributing to IPPs and attending IPP meetings, co-facilitating anger management and social skills groups, assisting in the special education classroom, providing individualized counseling and behavior management.
Lastly, I went on to work for 6 years at a high school as a special education assistant.
