I have worked for families with Down syndrome, to extreme disabilities, both in a public school situation and in private homes. One of the first families that I worked for had a young boy with Down syndrome, and a young girl, with exceptional cognitive abilities. The mother was a creator of alternative schools in NY. I lived on the premises and stayed in the main house when the parents were away, and was basically their surrogate parent. I worked for the family for 3 years. After, I worked at the local hospital as a nurse's and doctor's assistant. I worked in pediatrics a lot. Then I worked through a company calledfor my brother's family. Their first-born son had multiple birth defects. He needed full care, including giving meds and constant monitoring. I took care of him from infancy until he was about 10 years old. He's now in his late 30s. I also took care of him and monitored him when he had major surgery. I was also a volunteer ambulance driver and first responder for the Valley Cottage-Congers Volunteer Ambulance Corp. NY three days a week for about a yr and a half. I've worked at Darmouth Hospital in NH, Nyack Hospital, and Columbia Presbyterian Hospitals in NY.
