Growing up I had a little brother who had down syndrome (& who had other health problems that left him vegetated later in his life). Everyday I would ask his nurses if they needed/wanted any help with him like lifting him out of his chairs, changing his clothes, help prepare his medicine, help clean him up, anything I could help with I did. Although he had passed away now, the experience I had with him will last a lifetime and it made me a better person. He gave me a new perspective on care and understanding.
Another special needs care I've given is by being involved with my high school's Special Olympics for 3 years. There I met children with down syndrome, autism, Asperger's syndrome, and many other types of disorders. That day we played games with them, won prizes, did art projects, and ate lunch together.
I also was involved with my high school's day care program for 1 year where that year we had a boy with ADHD in the class. I was one of his student-teachers and we would always make snacks and paint together.
Other Qualifications, Certifications and Credentials
I work at a hospital and deal a lot with patients and their families directly but I am not a CNA or a nurse. I do know how to relate to patients or anybody with certain care needs.
