I have two years of experience working with children with disabilities. In the summer of 2007, I interned at a summer school program for preschool-aged children with varied developmental delays. Many of these children were on the autism spectrum, which allowed me to get extensive first hand experience working with young children with autism. During the summer of 2008, I worked at a summer life skills program with high school-aged youth that were developmentally challenged, some of whom were also on the autism spectrum, others had various other developmental delays. I worked one-on-one with a student using individualized learning materials. For part of the program, I directed a student while she learned to perform necessary skills during on-site training at a supermarket. Through this experience, I learned how important it is to adjust materials and tasks to a student's individual developmental level and learning style; I also realized the value of providing motivation and encouragement for success. I also volunteered for a semester in an Elementary School Special Education classroom. At the end of May, I earned a BA in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from UNH, and currently have a full-time position in a special education public school preschool as a program associate.
