of Experience
I am blessed to have a sister who is 3 years older than me who has been diagnosed with Down syndrome. My entire life I have grown up around her and her peers, attending and helping in summer and winter Special Olympics Games, and interacting with them on a daily basis as I was attending the same schools as my sister. She is affected by many of the symptoms Downs brings with it including heart defects, and speech delay. Through the years I have been there with her to experience the many surgeries and procedures that have aided her in better health. In 2006, I was given the opportunity to become certified through the State of Wyoming Department of Developmental Disabilities. This opened the door for me to work with other children with special needs as well. I began working with a 2-year-old Down syndrome girl and was able to experience the stages of her life that I don't remember going through with my own sister. I worked daily with her to develop her speech, mobility, and sign language skills. I have tended children with other disabilities such as ADD and ADHD, and been surrounded with many children of a various of other challenges but I feel like my area of expertise is in Down syndrome. I absolutely love being around Downs people, they have such sweet spirits and are so fun-loving. I have learned so much through their patterns of life.
