Ruth P. - Tampa Special Needs Caregiver

Profile of Ruth P.

Part-Time, 3 Years of Experience

I have a tender heart for children and adults with special needs due to the fact that my own son, now 21 years old was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. He was my third child and my "mother's intuition" told me that something wasn't quite right. I quickly got "on the ball" and had him enrolled in school at 3 years old. I was told that many of the things he was able to do was do to me, such as showing affection, making eye contact, laughing appropriately, etc. When he was in the 4th grade, we began to have some issues with him, so I went to work as a paraprofessional at his school (so I could be there to ward off problems with him) where I worked as a one-on-one with a severely autistic 5-year-old. The next year, I worked part-time at the same school with a 10-year-old who had severe anger issues. When my son went to middle school, we were still facing the same issues with him, so I again was employed by the school where I was in charge of two children, one hearing impaired and the other hearing impaired, learning disabled and had cerebral palsy. We finally solved the issues that my son was having leaving me free to be at home again. When I see a mom with a child who is impaired in some way, my heart goes out to her and I want to help her, but I don't want to intrude. I'm hoping that care. com will allow me to help a family with their child.
