Amy S. - Seattle Special Needs Caregiver

Profile of Amy S.

Part-Time, 10 + Years of Experience

I know several adults with certain disabilities that I'm friends with. My boyfriend's aunt has multiple sclerosis, one of my friends has cerebral palsy, and I'm dyslexic. I went to Hamlin Robinson School for Dyslexic Children, 1997-1998 (4th and 5th grade), my dad lost his arm when he was 10 due to cysts growing in his hand that grew back after surgeries so I grew up with my dad missing a hand. In 1999, I reunited with an old friend and took care of her brother many times from 1999-2003, he was 8-12 years old and suffers from Down syndrome, with that came mental challenges and speech delay. I've baby-sat many children with ADD/ADHD. I even have food allergies. I studied ASL for five years and in 1999 I went with my class to a school for deaf children in Mexico. Twice during the day we and the children, ages 5-17, had free time for two hours and the adults stayed in a different room. I loved playing games with the kids, I had two special girls, ages 6-7, that always played with me and I gave them hugs, played with their hair, they always went into my purse and wore my lip gloss. I watched them and others as they ran around and made them leave a certain area of the playground when I heard the famous rattle noise coming for a rattlesnake that they were oblivious to.
