of Experience
I started supporting individuals diagnosed with special needs near the end of 2004.
I always had a desire to support and educate individuals, and I finally decided to take the leap and try something new!! My ultimate goal is to be an educator--it may take 20 years, but it'll happen. I have always seen people as people. If an individual is willing to make an effort to challenge herself/himself and make progress, then she/he should have the resources to do so. I do believe that most people deserve the right to truly "live" life as opposed to just existing. It seems many individuals, especially those diagnosed with special needs, are pitied and as such are not given an opportunity to explore their abilities and limits. Pity has never created progress or a strong sense of self. With the right support, an individual can live their own best life.
I have supported individuals diagnosed with development disabilities in various settings. In Minnesota, I provided 48 hour respite for children, teens, and adults. I also volunteered at an independent living facility where I facilitated an exercise group for a few months. In California, I have worked in group homes supporting adolescents who have been diagnosed as severely emotionally disturbed and those who have been diagnosed under the autism spectrum disorder. I currently support adults diagnosed with varying development disabilities in the community--supporting them at their paid job, volunteer work, gym, or class. But my passion and desire lies in guiding and supporting youth.
Related Hobbies and Interests
My passion is in the arts. I have not had a lot of opportunity to try to integrate art into my work, but it is something that definitely interests me. I do realize some people can better express themselves through art than words.
