Rachel Z. - Sacramento Special Needs Caregiver

Profile of Rachel Z.

Part-Time, 6 Years of Experience

I love working with children with special needs. My most salient experience was working with a child with autism for a year as a respite provider. It was so rewarding observing his progress and celebrating the small successes every day. We took day trips around town and I worked with him helping him be aware of his environment and exposing him to new things. We stayed home a lot too, reading books, doing small projects, and playing games.

I completed my internship at an early-intervention agency serving medically fragile and emotionally at-risk children ages birth to 3. My experience in infant mental health has been very rewarding. I have done home visits, co-facilitated a therapeutic group for mothers and babies, and gained experience doing developmental evaluations. Prior to earning my master's in counseling and art therapy, I worked in a behavioral day school for at-risk high school students.

My experience with adults is more limited, but I co-facilitated a therapeutic group for adults with MR and various developmental delays. It was extremely rewarding (and fun!) to introduce clients (and staff) to new art projects and open up lines of communication. My background in art therapy and counseling was a perfect fit for the group, and I was sorry to end my internship and leave.
Related Hobbies and Interests
I am an artist. My most recent project is is illustrating two books for children. I also enjoy running, reading, hiking, and traveling.
