I started working with people with special needs at the age of 19, at an ADT (Adult Day Training) facility that specifically used ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) in Cocoa, Florida. I worked with adults that had Autism, Down syndrome, Prader Willi's, Schizophrenia, cerebral palsy, seizures, and those who were mentally challenged. I then began to work at a private school for Autistic children that also primarily used ABA, in Oviedo, Florida. I worked with children ages 2-9. I now work for a charter school for Autistic children, in Orlando, FL. This past academic year, I worked with mostly high school children.I graduated from the University of Central Florida, in August of 2008 with a B.S. in psychology. I plan on returning to school to pursue first a master's in education for special needs, and then a master's in applied behavioral analysis.
I love working with special needs because it is so rewarding. I love how in spite of the challenges those with special needs may face, they are no different than any other person. I believe just by spending some time with them and helping them, I get the gift of seeing these people for who they really are, and that to me is worth way more than any other job out there could pay for.
Related Hobbies and Interests
I love sports, music, and hanging out with friends. I played soccer growing up and I'm hoping to be able to help out with Special Olympics next year.
