Carole N. - New York Special Needs Caregiver

Profile of Carole N.

Full-Time, 10 + Years of Experience

I have over 30 years experience caring for disabled and able-bodied children, in Canada, England and the U.S.
I worked as a live-in caregiver for a multiply-handicapped boy for 15 years, providing him with: intensive physical therapy, all his personal care (he was totally dependent), enjoyable mealtimes, playtime and entertainment, and gave him a ton of love (and got it all back). I worked in a small institution for mentally handicapped children and adults, and developed close personal relationships with several residents. I taught them self-care skills, took them on walks and van outings, provided them with recreational activities, and tried to make their living space as homelike as possible. I also co-managed a small group home attached to a day school for physically and mentally disabled children in England. I provided them with after-school and night-time care.
I love the challenge of working with disabled people to teach them to be as independent as possible, whatever their degree of handicap. I love having a job that teaches me patience and compassion while helping another human being learn how to live. I love finding ways to teach people how to care for themselves, how to learn, how to play, and how to enjoy life.
Related Hobbies and Interests
I'm always looking in catalogs of toys, therapy equipment and self-help aids for special populations. I love photography and would like to find a way to use this skill to help disabled people.
