Hope M. - Minneapolis Special Needs Caregiver

Profile of Hope M.

Part-Time, 3 Years of Experience

I was a care taker for a little boy that was mentally disabled. He was 4 years old and couldn't do anything on his own and routinely had mini seizures. I took him on walks where he would hold my hand or sit in his stroller, gave him his routine meds, helped him with eating, grooming, playing and everything in between. He couldn't talk more than one word which he would say over an over. Soon he would jump and clap at the door saying Hoooooooooooooooope OoooooooooooopppppeeeeeIt made me realize I was making a difference and had a purpose in this little boy's life.

I have also worked for an elderly man with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. His disease was a sad one to watch progress but I loved working with him. He would have his "good days" where he remembered things about the navy and would have me go get his special picture box, each picture had a story he would reminisce about as he told me about each picture and his life. I loved doing that with him. His name was Bob and his wife's name was Barb. I would also help Bob to physical therapy exercises each day and would make him lunch. I had to help him stand up and walk. Bob didn't want a care taker, but after I was there for two weeks I saw him light up. His wife told me he would start to ask when I was coming or when I would be there next. I loved that. It touched my heart in a very special place.
