of Experience
I have various experiences working with special needs children of all developmental ranges. I have experiences working with those who have autistic, Down's syndrome, bi-polar, and schizophrenic children, along with children that don't have special needs.
While working as computer teacher for Commonwealth Academy, I had several students with learning disabilities in my classroom. I taught them how to organize and plan their work, understand directions, and complete tasks in an orderly and easy to understand manner.
While working at Deeper Life Ministries, some of my students were severely autistic. My position at Christ the Good Shepherd Church (For their preschool program) involved teaching a child with autism. He was enrolled in our preschool program. I worked with him on behavior, potty training, toys he liked, and speech. He liked repetitive play, loved numbers, letters and shapes and could became very agitated if a number or shape was missing or someone interfered with the number/letter orders he had made. He was very clever at number and letter ordering, and could do so almost without looking. I established a routine and tried not to break it too often. I gave him picture charts of what his day will consist of so that he would know what's going on and what to expect from that day.
My other experiences with special needs children include:
* While tutoring at Commonwealth Academy, I worked with autistic children between the ages of 5-9 years old, and out of a desire for fuller exposure, I visited other autistic classrooms in which the students ranged up to the age of 14. It took an enormous amount of patience but every little breakthrough was worth its weight in gold.
* I socially interacted with a child who had Down's syndrome. during my time as a part-time children's bible study teacher/baby sitter (for three children). I had a 12-year-old with Down syndrome who was truly a wonder. She would count the numbers of letters in your words as you spoke them. She had a tremendous passion for life and learning.
