I worked for eight months at a boarding home for mentally handicapped friends (Mallon Place, Spokane, WA). My main duties included housekeeping and kitchen-aide. There was a lot of interaction with the residents. I became familiar with their care plans and spent time getting to know and love them individually, according to their needs, and ways of communicating. This has been one of the most challenging, yet beneficial experiences in my life.

Also, my mother is bi-polar and "schizophrenia-effective," and I have dedicated a lot of my life to communicating with her in a healthy way.
