Gina B. - Chicago Special Needs Caregiver

Profile of Gina B.

Part-Time, 2 Years of Experience

Last year, I worked in a special education basic classroom at a high school part time. I was a paraprofessional and worked with each one of the 13 kids in the class. In the evenings, I worked as a behavioral aide in two different homes. One client I use to work with, was 19 and now currently 20, with severe cerebral palsy. My other client who I use to work with, is an 11-year-old boy with Autism. I have also taught dance to children suffering with different disabilities such as down syndrome and autism. I loved my work because each day was different and each day I was able to get a personal sense of accomplishment. Each child I worked with was unique, and I could help in different ways to make that child's day a little better. I would help by assisting the child with certain activities or helping them improve with a specific activity. No matter how I was feeling, going to work brought a smile to my face. Working with children helps bring back the simple pleasures to my life that I can lose sight of occasionally. I get to be a role model while also getting to be a kid all over again.
*I recently stopped working at both jobs due to school plans. I started attending UIC graduate school in Fall '09 to pursue a career in occupational therapy.
Related Hobbies and Interests
I love to dance and sing. I am not a good singer, but when I get with kids, I do not hold back. I also enjoy playing sports, watching sports, dressing up, going on community outings, and going outside.
