I started working with kids with special needs when a very special boy came into one of my swim lessons. He had Down syndrome, and I had to work with him one-on-one. It was very intimidating at first! It took a few sessions for him to get used to me, but after that time, we worked really well together. It was really satisfying to know that I helped to teach him a life-saving skill. I also work with deaf children. I worked at a summer camp during deaf week last summer, and the kids were just great! I tutored for a semester at the church for the deaf here, and would be back this semester, but I tore my ACL and physical therapy conflicted. :( I am a deaf education major and conversationally fluent in ASL.
