When I was in middle school, my life was greatly impacted by a girl with Down syndrome. She entered my life and we became instant friends. The love that radiated from her truly inspired me to continue working with special needs children. I became a part of what her mother called "Marin's Circle". I even went on a trip with Marin and her mother to Nevada for a special needs convention where Marin actually presented a speech! This led me to decide to go on a Girl Scout trip to New York where we went to a special needs facility, ranging from children between the ages of 3-18. At this facility, we were able to shadow a different therapist each day and see what their job actually consisted of when working with special needs children. When I was a sophomore in high school, I became a Sunday School teacher for 2-3-year-olds at my church where I worked with a special needs boy each Sunday. Throughout my high school years, my girl scout troop did many volunteer-activities at the Ronald McDonald's House at Texas Children's Hospital such as provide dinner for the families of children with cancer, have themed-parties for the children with cancer, and provide crafts, games, and face painting. Then, as I became more involved in my high school, I became a part of a club called "Best Buddies" where each person is paired-up with a special needs student in your high school and it is the goal of the club to hang out with your buddy at least twice a month (doing things such as baking cookies, going to the park, going to the mall, etc.) and to call them on the phone at least once a week. This experience completely changed my life when I was paired with a boy with Down syndrome. The entire club was filled with so much love and care that sometimes it was overwhelming. The friendships from each and every group I have been a part of are truly lasting friendships.
