I am a firm believer that our elderly deserve to live out the rest of their lives with dignity in every way and not pushed off into a nursing facility out of convenience. A long term nursing facility can be a viable alternative to home care. It should be for those elderly who can no longer take care of themselves and may end up hurt living on their own.
No elderly person should ever be regarded as a second class citizen. They all deserve advocates. Advocates are not just social workers, an ombudsman, etc. A CNA or HHA is a type of advocate as they see to their daily needs and are there to be sure they are getting the quality care that is needed. A CNA is also an advocate as they report to an RN any issues, changes, or concerns. This is the type of advocate I desire to become. I have the utmost respect for seniors and the elderly. This generation has seen so much history and changes in our nation. I tremendously enjoy hearing about their past because I am hearing living history. Because of the respect I have for them, I want to help in any way I can to give them not only respect but add to their quality of life. I believe any CNA or HHA should be a personal care advocate and a friend. I have First Aid training, including CPR. I have been trained in both a nursing home and an assisted living facility.
