I enjoy spending time around seniors and learning about their life experiences. My experience of actually working in this capacity is as follows: I spent about a year helping a family with their elderly mother. I cooked for her and did some light cleaning and helped her with some of her personal hygiene needs. I currently have a friend with dementia, who is in her 70's, so I know how to communicate with a person that is slowly losing touch with the world around them. They want to spend a lot of time talking about the things from the past that they can remember well.

Care giving is a rewarding experience, especially if it's done in a way that preserves the individual's dignity. It's a chance to make a difference in someone's life whose opportunities for connecting with the world around them has been limited by circumstances. I found it to be a rewarding experience for myself at the same time.
