From doctor visits to Christmas dinner, I've done everything one would expect a senior caregiver to do. Going the extra mile for my senior citizens has left me with hundreds of great memories and strong relationships. Many of my clients will confirm that we built relationships that go outside of work resulting in us keeping in touch years after I am no longer working with them.

My care taking experience goes back as far as my early twenties when I began substituting as a kindergarten teacher. The lessons I learned during my 20 years of kindergarten teaching are often applicable with seniors. Patience and compassion are among many traits school teachers share with caregivers. Perhaps it is because my parents are overseas in Romania and I don't see them often that I get such joy from helping seniors here in the United States. Often times the seniors I care for relate to being far from their family which gives us something in common right away.

I am passionate about senior caregiving because it gives me a feeling of fulfillment to know that I am helping those who are struggling to help themselves. Being an attentive listener is what senior care giving is all about to me. I believe that if you truly care about your patient and show it by listening to them you will take much more from your time with them than your pay. Fortunately, this is something I enjoy doing as I have learned that many of the struggles my seniors have persevered through are similar to struggles I go through at times.

For instance, one of my gentlemen I cared for was a war veteran who has been through more in his life than anyone could imagine. Hearing his war stories, financial struggles, and family problems gave me a new outlook on life. When talking about his life John's tone wasn't one of sadness and despair, but one of triumph and perseverance. Listening to the way he was able to persevere left me with a feeling of strength worth much more than the money I was to be paid for my time spent.
