I must admit that my experience with elder care is brief; I've only done it twice directly. When I was 21, I had a live-in job in Clemson, North Carolina, taking care of this bed-restricted lady. That job lasted for about three months. I moved to New York. While in New York, I visited nursing homes with my church. The most I did there was reading to them. The second direct time was in 1992, while I lived in High Point, North Carolina. The patient didn't have any legs, but he could still get around. I only lived two houses from him, so every morning after 9 a.m., I would go to his house and cook him breakfast and clean up. This patient was a stubborn man, but not to me. His family wanted to put him in a nursing home because he lived by himself and would not bathe; they could not get him to give himself a bath, but I was able to. I enjoyed working with the elderly. The reason why I didn't continue with it was because the patient and I had become like family, and it hit we hard when he died. What made it especially hard is the fact that I found him dead. I did feel a little better after my neighbor, who asked my to take the job of caring for him, told me that he died peaceful knowing that someone cared for him. Over the years, I've went out of my way to assist the elderly anyway that I could, from helping them take their grocery to their car, helping them across the street, to helping them get in their car. The most recent time that I came close to elder care was in 2007, while living in Winston Salem, North Carolina. This patient was my cousin. He lived with my niece, but I would go by and run errands for him, pay bills, and take him grocery shopping. My niece did the cooking and cleaning. Th bottom line is I love people in general, but especially the elderly. Just about every female member in my family has worked with the elderly at one time or another. My baby sister has made a career of it. Just spend five minutes talking with me, and you will easily see that what I do, I do from the heart.
