I have spent the last six months in Israel volunteering at an elderly home and really fell in love with the seniors there. While there I was mentored by active and retired nurses from around the world. My duties included meal preparation, assisting residents with shower, toilet, clothing changing needs; bathing, changing and feeding total care patients; changing bed linens, providing companionship through reading books, playing games, going on walks etc. I also gave medication to residents provided by our nurses and enjoyed visiting residents even during my free time.
I enjoy working with seniors for numerous reasons. My grandma in Illinois is the only living grandparent I have left and I love soaking up here stories, wisdom and humor any time we can visit. Unfortunately current pop culture does not send a message that the elderly are valuable to society but they are! They have great experiences to share with us and lessons we can glean from them.
Before my volunteer time I taught German levels I-IV to high school students. I am a fluent non-native speaker and enjoyed daily using this skill while in Israel.
