I began working in an assisted living nursing home at age 18, where I worked full time while I attended school. I worked closely with another staff member to provide care for 30 residents at a time, which would typically include dressing, feeding and meal assistance, cleaning and laundry, personal care and hygiene, activities, and companionship. At this organization I gained experience with patients who experienced mild to severe Alzheimer's and dementia, and mild psychological disorders. I worked at this organization for a year, then progressed to in-home care for a variety of clients for 2 years. These clients typically required more of a companionship role and a person-centered focus, due to family obligations and a heavier reliance on me as a caregiver towards their medication and ambulation.
