I first became aware of seniors when my mother, who raised 6 children of her own, was inspired to work at a gift shop in a senior home located in the suburbs. Her duties frequently went above and beyond minding the shop, but rather in caring for each one of the residents who came through her door, whether that was offering up a chair to ease the discomfort of standing or providing special services such as delivering packages to the post office. On occasion, I was invited to help out at some of the social gatherings, one of which included a scarf tying demonstration and an annual tea party. Like all people, every person has a story to be told, and often times, I find those who reach their senior years are overlooked. And that is a shame, especially because they have so much to offer as they are filled with so much history and in turn, wisdom, simply from having lived life just a tad longer than I!
