When my great grandmother broke her hip and was in the hospital I stayed all night with her because my family wanted her to know we are there for her and to make sure she received the care we felt she deserved. That was when I knew I wanted to help the elderly.
When my maternal grandmother was diagnosed with cancer I took her home to pass away. I became her full time caregiver. I learned how to take care of her feeding tube, change her bed (she was bedridden), and how to bathe her. Taking care of her was a blessing for me because I know I made her last few months very happy.
After her passing I became a companion for the Department Of Aging and Disability in Arlington VA. I had three clients that I took care of; one was blind, one could not speak and one that could not walk on her own. I loved working with them I learned a lot from them.
My paternal grandmother was also diagnosed with a rare cancer. I helped my aunt take care of her in the nursing home. We took turns staying with her at night just so she knew we were there for her and to make sure she was cared for.
I also help a gentleman that lives in a retirement home clean his apartment once or twice a month. In the same retirement home I had one other client whom has since passed away. I also help a 71-year-old man, by driving him to his chemo three times a week.
