I've been a caretaker/companion to an older man for five years now. He had Parkinson's and dementia. He just passed away recently. I used to go into him in his home five days a week. I would make him his breakfast, give him his pills, help him with his shower and getting dressed and when we had all that taken care of we would often go out and visit with his friends, take his dog 'ladyday' for a walk or just go and run some errands. Also I would take him to have his hair cut, that was always a very social occasion. I would take him to his Dr. appointments and dentists appointments. He loved being out and about especially in the nice weather. We had a lot of fun together. Before that I was a companion to an older lady for two years until she passed away on her 95th birthday. I'm a very caring and gentle person and that's what makes me love doing this type of work. I realize that a lot of people depend on me entirely and I get great satisfaction out of helping them feel good and happy and making them as comfortable as possible. I was born in Ireland and we were brought up to respect our elders and always to take care of them, whether they were family or not.
