Up until last year, I was caring for my 89-year-old mother-in-law. Although, she was a feisty old gal she had a variety of medical problems and needed assistance. Aware of her concern over losing her independence, I found ways to ease her mind. For example, on light shopping days, I would drive her to the market and she would go off on her own and complete her shopping without me following her around. However, without her knowledge, I watched as she walked down each isle to make sure she was okay. Sometimes, I'd watch as she pinched grapes from their stems for a quick taste or dispensed just enough candy from the dispenser to satisfy her sweet tooth. Mom was a kid at heart. She enjoyed trips to the craft store, the casino and the ice cream parlor. I drove mom to all of her medical appointments and helped her fill out questionnaires. I also sat in during doctor visits to make sure that all her questions and concerns were addressed. For the most part, these visits went well, other times I played referee. Like I said "Mom was Feisty"! I prepared a medication time chart which seemed to work well for her. On days that we weren't off on some excursion, I would help mom with her baking or, we would just sit and share stories while I polished her nails. Unfortunately, I lost my best friend last July and I truly miss her. I would appreciate being given the opportunity to provide the same loving care to another senior as I am now retired and have the time to give. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
