I started this wonderful adventure when a dear friend of mine lost her husband and her children were concerned that she wasn't getting out enough, shopping, walking, having lunch, or making sure she kept up with doctor appointments. So, she talked to them and told them I was looking for about 30 hours per week to do what she wanted to do and also what needed to be done. As the 5 years passed, I loved this work and got to become better friends than we already were. We also knew where the line was between helping her and still being friends. I also got to know her children and still keep in touch with a card here and there. After she passed away suddenly one night, from an unexpected stroke, I was devastated, but also learned a major lesson. Life is a circle, and I was honored to be in hers.
Since then, I have worked for an agency, but it was hard because the clients changed so often you really didn't get a chance to get to know him/her, and you were on to your next assignment. I was offered so many jobs of friends that I took care of, even for a short period of time. It was a compliment and got to know more and more wonderful seniors. I could listen to their lives, close my eyes and picture how different each one was compared to ours in the 2000's.
