I've worked as a substitute assistant teacher at various daycare centers and preschools for a little over a year. I have also worked as a child and elderly caregiver for an agency that provides in-home care to families around North San Diego County.
As a substitute assistant teacher, I've provided extra help and supervision to lead teachers at daycare centers and preschools, helped set up meals, and participate in activities with the children during play time.
As a caregiver, I provide supervision to children while their parents are out at work or out to dinner with friends. I also work with the elderly and help them with everyday tasks such as bathing and meal preparation, as well as running errands and housekeeping tasks such as laundry, making the bed, vacuuming, etc.
I love working with both children and the elderly but my main focus is the elderly.
During my last semester of school, I had an internship at a skilled nursing facility where I was able to work with elderly residents. I provided my assistance to the Activities Staff where I helped coordinate the daily activities (i. e. games, arts and crafts, etc.), planned and coordinated holiday parties, and spent quality one-on-one time with the senior residents.
I just recently graduated in December 2012 with a Bachelors Degree in Human Development (Emphasis in Health Services) and I will be starting nursing school in June 2013. After completing the nursing program, I would really love to work with elderly patients. Working as an elderly caregiver has opened my eyes to a career I'd really like to pursue.
