My earlier care-giving experience was with an aunt and grandmother after their surgeries. As an apartment resident manager, I found myself in the role of nurse and caregiver sometimes for long periods until family members or other alternatives could be arranged. I was the oldest girl in my own family and gravitated to the nanny role natually, my first live-in position being that for a sweet infant with a brittle bone disease. Later, I helped to set up an assisted floor in a new high-rise in town. There, I hired on part-time, but returned full time first chance, working again with my favorite dementia patients and adding many newcomers. I was concerned about being slight of build when the husband of an Italian woman asked me to care for her, because she was heavier and there would be no one else there, but with the help of the modern bath lift and his coaching, it was a breeze. My last care-giving experience was for my fiance who passed in 2010 of brain cancer. He always wanted me to do it for others too. I have not yet.
